Support for Orphans Living With AIDS (SOLWA) is an informal group of volunteers based in Mumbai, India. We offer our time and money to assist orphans, primarily those who are HIV+.
Today 42 children, all with HIV/AIDS, live at Ish Kripa (God's Mercy) Orphanage, which is part of the larger Helpers of Mary orphanage compound Naya Jeevan, currently housing about 350 children.
SOLWA has adopted this home to try and improve the lives of these children.
SOLWA is involved in various short, medium and long term initiatives at the Ish Kripa and Naya Jeevan orphanages. One of the main achievements to date has been the building of a school at Ish Kripa. In addition, SOLWA provides the funding for three full-time teachers at the school.
SOLWA is involved in the medical care of the Ish Kripa children and has been instrumental in them receiving antiretroviral medication, which has resulted in a marked improvement in their health. The children undergo weekly check-ups and regular blood tests. Currently SOLWA is involved in facilitating dental care for the children. SOLWA provides certain basic food items to the orphanage to ensure the children have a healthy, balanced diet.
SOLWA facilitates guidance and counselling for the teachers and children both as a group and individually.
A team of SOLWA volunteers visits the orphanage every Tuesday for a day of fun and learning with the children. Some of the regular activities include english lessons, IT training and art lessons. Teaching materials have been carefully prepared to make it easy for any volunteer to teach a class.
A computer lab with 8 computers has been set up at Ish Kripa. SOLWA has contracted a nearby IT college to conduct IT courses on site. This program has been extended to Naya Jeevan with 4 computers being provided for the children and 3 computers for the nuns.
Some infrastructure that SOLWA has provided or helped facilitate with other donors include the installation of a borehole, the installation of a generator, the refurbishment of the toilets, and currently, the installation of a water treatment plant.
If you have an idea for a project that could improve the lives of these children we would love to hear from you and work with you.
